Needlepainting Pansy

Thoroughly enjoyed my stitching class weekend taught by Tanja Berlin.  I chose the easiest beginner design she had and I'm very glad I did!  The stitching is all done using one thread but the stem wasn't difficult to do as it was 6 rows of stem stitching using 3 different shades of green.
The leaf was my first attempt at long/short stitching and keeping the angle right and the stitches the right lengths is tricky and I struggled with it and had to redo some of it.
Starting on the flower and working with the shades of purple was fun and I slowly began to get the hang of keeping the angles right and the long/short threads spaced evenly.  Again I had to redo many of my stitches as my curve was often out and I either stitched my threads too close together or too far apart.
Whenever I had used wooden bars before for stitching I had always put the tacks in on the top.  Tanja recommended putting the tacks on the side which certainly helped in not getting my threads tangled!
Threads in the kit for stitching my pansy and very small #10 crewel embroidery needles.  A needle threader was also included in the kit but threading the needle with just one thread wasn't difficult.
This is the kit we received from Tanja.  Hope mine turns out 1/2 as well!
We had quite a storm blow through Saskatchewan last night and here are a couple of pictures I took of these spectacular Mammatocumulus clouds (also known as breast clouds).  I had never seen anything like them before.  Thankfully we didn't get any hail :)

  1. I have seen clouds like that before....years ago, just a couple of hours befor a tornado outbreak. They reminded me of billard balls in a rack rolling around.
The stitching is beautiful and you are much too hard on yourself, it is really looking nice!

    1. Thanks Deb. A tornado did touch down that evening but only went through farm land. I'm certainly enjoying the long/short stitching and hope to get better at it.

  2. Wow! That's some sky. Those clouds look threatening.
Lucky you to stitch with Tanja B.! I think yours is looking wonderful! I've done long and short before, but never with just a 1-ply thread. wow.

    1. Thanks Susan. She's a wonderful teacher and I was so glad of the opportunity to take a class from her here in Regina! Just hope I can keep the angle right on the rest of the petals :)

    1. Thank you very much Annet! I hope it looks good when I'm finished. I'm also am going to try needlepainting a wild rose if this pansy turns out well.

  4. your long and short is coming along very well, one strand means it takes much longer but I always think one strand looks so much better. I use different sorts of threads so I only need one strand, stranded cotton, flower thread, perle, cotton a broder etc, two strands I seem to make a mess.
Clouds very impressive and see why they are called breast clouds!

  7. You did great! Do you plan to finish it?
I tried my hand at needlepainting when Mary C. hosted
free lessons on her website. The lessons and pattern are still
available as free pdf's. Perhaps you already knew :-)!

  9. Your pansy is beautiful! I hope you'll share it with us when finished. I'm sure you'll do a great job; I too sometimes have trouble with keeping the angle of stitches correct... could you put some very faint pencil lines in the petals to guide your stitches in the correct direction??
Those clouds are amazing.. I've never seen formations like that. Nature is awesome, isn't she?
