Stumpwork Owl

Keeping in the theme of owls I tried my hand at a small stumpwork owl. It only measures 1 1/2 inches or 3.8 cm so I'm talking pretty small. I drew an outline on a scrap piece of cotton and used split, straight and buttonhole stitches using 2 strands of thread.  I cut it out of the fabric and stitched it onto a piece of handmade silk paper turning in the edges as I went along.
I left an opening at the bottom and top, stuffed it and stitched the openings closed. I crocheted a strand of floss for the branch and added some leaves that I buttonholed stitched around.  I used Jan Nicholas's book Stumpwork Embroidery to help me.
While working on my owlet a Kingfisher stopped for a breather.  They don't sit still for long so I was thrilled to snap a few pictures before he flew away.
So many of our birds have gone South already so it's nice to see that this Kingfisher is still here :)

  1. You have a cute birdy within your house as well as outside. The owl perches nicely on the branch. The book seems full of inspiration.

  2. Well done on the owl. It looks great - love the colours and composition. Now you could try a kingfisher using the last photo! I know how hard it is to photograph birds- so well captured!
